A Day in the Life on this Magical Mystery Tour - Liverpool, August 15th 2026
Roll Up!! Roll up for the Mystery Tour,
Heya from the home of the Fab Four: the one and only Liverpool.
It might surprise some of you that we have never been to Liverpool, despite spending a lot of time in this region, but it’s true.
We left Wales after breakfast and the road to Liverpool was pretty easy. We found our accommodation very easily and parked Mokka in the complimentary carpark before dropping of our bags. It was too early for check-in so we went and got a great Thai massage before a quick lunch and check-in.
Our hotel was called The Liner and was themed like a cruise ship. It was pretty cool - portholes, dark blue carpet, gold banisters, etc.- and our room had a fan in it. Yep, it was 31 degrees when we checked in, and even though everywhere in this part of the world caters well to the cold, they don't really have much ready for the heat.
We made our way down to the Alberts Dock area, through the pedestrian zone in the city, and the initial vibes were that the city felt pretty cool. The handful of people that had served us already were super-friendly, and the accents sounded great. The architecture was regal and the dock refurbishment impressive. All this was secondary to why we were really here, though, which was to board the big ole’ yellow bus for The Magical Mystery Tour.
The bus left at 4.30 and it was full. Over the next two hours, we had an absolute ball doing all things Beatles. We saw all four childhood homes, schools, and churches that they attended. We also went to Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, and saw murals before returning to the city and Matthew Street, which is Beatles central and houses The Cavern Club. The tour guide played Beatles songs throughout the tour, and this was one of the best tours that we’ve ever been on.
We ended up at The Cavern Club for a drink, and we watched the young guy on stage play Beatles tunes. It was so amazing to stand in this iconic venue that I’ve seen pics of for years, but to have a pint and hear Beatles tunes - in the venue where they played 292 times - was next level!
The next day we wandered around the town and checked out two cathedrals - St Luke’s Bombed Out Cathedral and Liverpool Cathedral, which is the biggest Anglican Church in the world.
After lunch at Pret, we went back to the Albert Docks area, but this time to The Beatles statue, to do Day 2 of Beatlemania - the walking tour.
Our guide, Heidi, was a Liverpudlian, and for two hours she told us more about the lads, showed us pubs where they drank, general history about the city and of course the famous churches. My favourite tidbit from the day was when we learned about the Liver Birds. These two birds are on top of the Royal Liver Building at the dock, and the female (Bella) faces the ocean to ensure that the sailors make it home safely, while the male (Bertie) faces the city and ensures that the pubs open on time! Awesome.
We left the tour early (as we had clocked up nearly 40000 steps in the last two days and were pretty knackered), but we ended up at John Lennon’s favourite pub: The Philharmonic. This gorgeous pub is right near the opera house and even has a Grade 1 listed urinal. Classic. We sat in the Phil dining room, sipping a drink and resting our weary bones in plush, throne-seats.
We were absolutely knackered and grabbed a takeaway meal from M&S Food before retiring to the room.
Liverpool: eclectic, beautiful, proud as punch about the Beatles, a huge port city, friendly locals, lots of homeless, great buildings, hundreds of pubs and theatres, a true rock n roll town.
Needless to say, we loved it, and only scratched the surface. I already want to go back.
